The Interior Design Show - 2013

January 29, 2013

The Interior Design show ran this past weekend, and I was lucky enough to attend again. This year I was exceptionally lucky to be invited by Masco and Beige Is Dead to participate in their #instawalk with a bunch of very talented design bloggers (seriously - Meredith Heron, and Jonathan Legate were in the group, and it was led by Margot Austin - I have no illusions that my blog is on par with their work, but I was honoured to be asked).

We spent the morning in Friday wandering the floor at the Interior Design show Instagraming all the great things that caught our eyes, and I thought I'd share some of my shots below (If you want to see more search for #ids13walk in Instagram)

I really wanted to take this lovely gold flush mount light from Living Lighting on King home with me - I think it would look pretty in my foyer
There were some many wonderful things to look at, that it was hard to take it all in. Looking at the hashtag on Instagram later I saw lots of things I had somehow missed.

Did you guys go to the show this year? Did you go gaga for the copper tub like I did? What was your favourite booth?

Thinking About - Thank You Cards

January 17, 2013

It’s a few weeks after Christmas and I’ve been a bad girl – I’m only now getting to my thank you cards. I bought a package of cards last year before I realized what a marvellous selection of free printable cards available on the internet, and now I’m wishing I could use some of the lovely ones I found. The beauty of printable cards is you can print just as many as you need or pick the card that you think will best suit the person you’re sending it to.

Unfortunately I have to use up the ones I have on hand, but I thought I’d share some of the freebies with you in case you’re bad like me and haven’t written your thank yous either.

The above are a few of my favourites, but I've pinned a number of others on my Pinterest board. If you had to pick just one, which would you like to receive? I love the Flamingo card - they really are a strange-looking bird.
PS - I made a very concerted effort to find what I believe to be the original sources of these images and link properly to them. Please let me now if I am mistaken.

Scenes From My Weekend

January 14, 2013

I got up to a couple of adventures over the weekend so I thought I’d share.

On Saturday morning D and I got up a earlier than normal for a weekend and drove to north Oshawa to pick up this little number (this is the sellers picture).
New vintage hutch
I’m crazy I know, buying yet another project before finishing (ahem – starting) so many other projects, but it’s an almost perfect match to my living room console, so I couldn’t not get it. Right? Plus it was only $40 (if you don't count the gas I needed to drive an hour each way to get it). It does need quite a bit of work, and while I’m normally a ‘wood should look like wood’ purist, this is a piece that may need to be painted given the many chips in the veneer, and the damaged foot. I also need to source some more chopsticks as this piece has got damaged trim - just like the console did. The hutch will go in my dining room so I’m trying to figure out if I do have to paint it what colour might work with the kitchen’s dark blue floor, and the piece's brass hardware. Once it’s finished will help add some needed storage to my dining room (and will replace my old dresser which is the next item to go into my January Cure outbox).

On Sunday I went to the Junction flea with a friend.  It’s normally a little outdoor flea market in the Junction neighbourhood of Toronto, but yesterday it was indoors at a space on Queen street. It was probably scheduled indoors because well, it’s January in Toronto, and it’s normally it's well below zero at this time of year. Yesterday it was almost 15 degrees above zero. #crazy

Anyways, the Junction flea was pretty neat with a wide variety of vendors and items for sale. I did bring home two things that I thought were pretty.
Tall kaiser vase with purple flowers

New Glass bowl filled with clementines
I bought both the vase and the bowl from the same vendor (wish I had remembered to get her name) for $40. I think the glass bowl looks a bit like an overturned iceberg. The white porcelain vase says ‘Kaiser – Germany’ on the bottom, but I couldn’t find a similar vase online to see if I got a good deal or not. It doesn’t really matter though as I’m happy with my purchases.
Desk chair and bathroom cabinet I sold
This weekends task for the January cure was to organise my kitchen, make myself a new recipe and buy myself flowers. I did buy myself flowers as you can see from the picture of my new vase above, but I completely failed at the other tasks. On a positive note I did continue with the outbox task and sold two furniture items on Kijiji, and made myself $80 which covered the cost of the hutch and the pretty flea market purchases.

How was your weekend? Did you do anything fun? Buy any furniture or something pretty? What do you think I should do with my new hutch - I need some ideas.

Apartment Therapy

The January Cure - an update

January 11, 2013

In my last post I detailed the list of things I hoped to accomplish this year in my home. The making of the list was prompted by the Apartment Therapy January Cure. and I though I’d give you a wee update.

Last weeks tasks started off pretty well. After I made my list, and started my outbox I made good use of the rush of energy that comes with the start of any project, but by the end of the weekend my enthusiasm for this month-long project had dramatically decreased.

First up – my front hall closet. Honestly my closet wasn’t too horrific, so it only took about 30 minutes to get this task complete.
My unorganized front hall closet
My front Hall closet - before
I’m a BIG believer in using all the same hangers (preferably wood ones – Ikea sells packages for a good price, and so does Homesense) - this by default will make your closets look neater, so I was a bit dismayed to find some other types of hangers when I opened the door and really took a look.

Use hangers that are all the same - it makes a big difference
The wire hangers were the first items to get added to my outbox, and were quickly followed by a couple of jackets I no longer wear, an old purse, and a pair of winter boots (I had bought a new pair just before Christmas). While cleaning out the old purse I discovered this which I’d forgotten I had:

Woohoo! Cleaning is making me money!
My front closet - organized

Next I moved a few steps over to get started on my linen closet. I opened the door, and then was completely and utterly overwhelmed. Take a look - see overwhelming (I can't believe I'm sharing my disaster with the world).

I decided to take the easy route and started on my actual linens. I pulled everything out and discovered I had an awful lot of sheets for a home with only 1 bed. I also discovered I had a whole selection of never opened new sheets and pillowcases at the bottom of the big pile. I ended up adding about half my old sheets to my outbox, so that section of my linen closet is looking a lot better. When I looked at the rest of my closet I lost my organizing mojo, so it will have to wait for another day.

The tasks for the weekend were three fold – I was to mop my floors, buy green cleaning products, and buy myself flowers. If you’ve read this blog for a while you know I don’t have any difficulty buying myself flowers so that task was easily completed. I was less successful with the other two. I only managed to mop three rooms – my living room, the kitchen and the bathroom – my bedroom and dining room currently have random piles of stuff everywhere that I need to find homes for, and I was too lazy to move them to mop.

The last task for the weekend was to buy new ‘green’ cleaning products. I already have cleaning products, and while they may not be ‘green’ I can’t see the point in buying new stuff until I need some – wouldn’t throwing out what I already have be just as bad for the environment as using it? Other than buying some toilet cleaner (because I needed it) I’m putting this task in the ‘not completed’ column. I will commit to buying green products from now on, so this task will eventually migrate over to the completed column.

I case I’ve given you the impression I didn’t accomplish much, by the end of the weekend my outbox had become 4 boxes, one table, a computer monitor and a bag of clothes, and instead of leaving it all to languish in boxes in my living room (which is a classic Michelle thing to do) I actually hauled it all out of my house and donated it – Yay me!
I also drove out to Oshawa and picked up this Kijiji bookcase which will help me with the ‘get more storage’ item on the list of tasks for my living room, and I’ve decided it will be the project I commit to completing this month (Picking the project was the task for day 5). I really want to paint it (it’s currently black and rather institutional looking), but spray-paint is out since it’s winter, so I’ll have to come up with something else. Hopefully something amazing will come to me soon since it’s already the 11th of January.

Are you guys doing the January cure? Are you having any success?

Apartment Therapy

These aren't resolutions. Really.

January 04, 2013

After my not so stellar attempt at resolutions in 2012 I vowed I wasn’t going to make that same mistake again. Nope – I wasn’t going to make any sort of resolution or list or mental note or anything related to things I wanted to get done in 2013. And then I got an email on January 2nd.

Apparently sometime in December Apartment Therapy posted that they would be running what they’re calling the January Cure, and I signed up. With statements like: ‘If you are ready to whip your home into shape, get it clean, organized and under control, we're here to help - let's do it together! … we'll send you emails from January 2 through February 1, giving you all the info you need to know to follow along, stay motivated and complete your assignments. By the end of January, you'll be sitting pretty in a clean, fresh, organized home’ can you really blame me? I mean who doesn’t want to live in a clean and organised home? I certainly do.

Anyways, I signed up and then kinda forgot about it, that is until I got my first email about it on January 2nd. The task? Make a list of the things in each of the rooms in your home that you want to change. Drat. My not-making-any-resolutions-or-lists-in-2013 vow lasted about 30hrs into the New Year. Oh well. I’m a glutton for punishment so I made my list of things I wanted to change in each of the rooms in my home, and unsurprisingly discovered that quite a number of them are the same as what was on my list from last year. What’s a little different this time is I was supposed to keep the number of to-do items per room to 3-5 which forces you to prioritise what’s most important – the changes that will make the most impact. Here’s my list:

Foyer
  • Organise front hall closet
  • Organise linen closet
  • Change overhead light
  • Add a rug
Bedroom
  • Organise closet
  • Add window coverings
  • Get two matching bedside tables
  • Paint the walls
Bathroom
  • Organise medicine cabinet and under the sink
  • Replace the shower curtain rings
Living room
  • Organise the bookshelf and media cabinet
  • Add more lighting
  • Get some more storage
  • Add window coverings
  • Paint the walls
Kitchen
  • Organise my cabinets – make better use of limited space
  • Paint the ceiling
  • Update the lighting
  • Remove the weird (ugly) wall organiser
Dining Room
  • Repair walls and paint
  • Get more storage
  • Add window coverings
  • Change the overhead light
Its funny that when you only list 3-5 things per room the list seems rather manageable even though some of the things will be big jobs (I’m looking at you dining room walls). You probably noticed that the first thing for almost all the rooms is to organise. I’ve got so much stuff that isn't organised in any particular way (Er, I guess that  means it’s disorganised) that I can’t find anything (my tape measure for example).

If you’d like to join Apartment Therapy’s January Cure you can click here, and in case you want to know what you’re getting yourself in for, here’s a schedule of everything you’ll be asked to do.

PS – Yesterday’s task was to create an ‘outbox’. Mine’s done, and I’m hoping it will soon be overflowing.

Some Favorites from 2012

January 03, 2013

After my last post where I whined about not accomplishing too many of the things on my to-do list for 2012, my mom emailed to say she didn’t like the post. Since we should all try to keep our moms happy I thought I’d do a quick recap of some of the things I DID accomplish last year.

My first big project of 2012 was my Craigslist dresser rehabilitation, and I’m still in love with it. I still sometimes (ahem – yesterday) look at it and can’t believe that I did it all myself.

For Valentine’s day I came up with some rather tasty looking heart-shaped cookies. It’s not so much my baking skills I'm proud of for this post, but it was my first attempt at food styling, and it’s not so bad.

St. Patrick’s Day had me sharing with you a recipe for Irish brown bread. This was my second attempt at food styling, and yes, I did buy the smoked salmon and cream cheese specifically to take pictures. Don’t worry – I made sure to eat all the props once the pictures were taken – no point in wasting it.
Lox and cream cheese on fresh brown bread
In April I shared the little Ikea table and chairs I customized for my boyfriend’s nephew.

In June I made a little change in my kitchen by replacing the cabinet door handles. This is a favorite as I think it took a bit of mettle and moxie to attack my cabinet doors with a drill, and the new handles look SO much better.
New Spann handles
My refinished media console was my next big project, and I’m happy to report it does a wonderful job at storing all my crafting supplies and other random things I can’t seem to find a place for.

My blog underwent a couple of makeovers in 2012 starting with this post, but I have to say I’m quite pleased with it’s current look which I revealed in November.
Old and new blog look
And last but not least was my Almond Cream puffs. This post is a favorite not just for it’s a gastronomic delight, but the pictures make me drool, so I think my photography skills are improving.

So there you have it – my favorite posts from 2012, and no, it hasn’t escaped me that almost half of them are relating to food. I wonder what I’ll say were my favorites from 2013?
