Meet Eamonn & Jack

September 05, 2014

When I started blogging in 2011 I did it mostly on impulse, and while I understood that my new blog needed a name I didn’t really understand what the implications of that name choice would be. When I chose the name Sweetsuite10 I thought it was cute, and it fit the subject on which I intended to blog about – namely my small apartment that happens to be suite #10. What I didn’t realise on that very early morning was that the scope of what I planned to blog about might change over time, and that a name that referenced an apartment unit was not a great long-term choice (while I love my apartment I really hope I don’t live here forever).

Here we are in 2014 and, as you can see, deciding on a new name for my blog literally took me years – either because the names I came up with were already in use by some other smart blogger, the URLs were unavailable, or, as in a couple of cases, after buying the domain I realised a few weeks later that it wasn’t the 'right' name.
Eamonn

The name Eamonn & Jack wasn’t decided on a whim – I first thought of it last fall and let it sit and simmer before making the final decision. What I think is special about the name is that there is only one other person in the world who shares the same relationship with the men who inspired it – my brother. Eamonn and Jack were my grandfathers.

Eamonn was born in Dublin, Ireland as the 2nd of 6 children. He and my grandmother met at a tennis club where they both loved to play. After my grandparents married they had 9 children – 5 girls and 4 boys over a span of 16 years. My great grandfather was a well-known builder/developer at the time, but instead of joining the family business my grandfather started his own, making wood furniture for schools and churches. One of my grandmothers prized possessions is the lovely dining room set my grandfather made for her. Sadly he passed away at the age of 46 before I had the opportunity to meet him.
Jack

Jack was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and, after the loss of his father at the age of two was an only child until his mother remarried and gave him a younger sister. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Air Force and was stationed in England during World War II. When he returned from war he worked in Insurance and raised three children. In an era where major home improvements weren’t normally a DIY project, he and my dad did undertake a basic renovation of their basement to create a rec room for my dad and his sisters to use with their friends. Jack was an avid golfer and he and my grandmother loved to travel. They visited England several times, and even traveled though Russia before the fall of the Soviet Union. He passed away shortly before my second birthday.

These are the two men who this site is named after. It’s hard to put into a couple of short sentences who they were especially since I didn’t have the chance to really know either one. Even in these short descriptions I see facets of them - of what they did, and what they liked, that are strikingly similar to some things that I too like and enjoy. I can’t think of a more fitting name for my new site, and I hope they don’t mind that I’m using their names to share some of the things that I love with you.

Freaking Out and Lacquered Walls

January 20, 2014

Classes started again last week; on Saturday I had my first Interior Decorating 1 class and I’m admitting right now that I’m scared. So far the courses I’ve taken have been a little easy – no actual decorating happening. That’s going to change with this class, and I’m currently experiencing an overwhelming feeling of terror.

I’m absolutely terrified that I’ve made a huge mistake. What am I doing going back to school? Where in the hell did I get the idea that I had any sort of skill at actually decorating a room? There’s so much to think about, and source, and pull together, and I haven’t any idea what I’m doing, and there’s a looming deadline for the project and I don’t think I can have it done in time. Oh my God – what have I done???

*Breathe*

One of the projects for my class (one of two that are terrifying me) is to take an image from a fashion magazine that has a triadic colour scheme and translate that into a contemporary living room. After hours of searching (mostly at Chapters since I don’t own a single fashion magazine) I ended up with one from a issue of Fashion magazine from 2009 that is predominantly navy blue (And yes, I used the term ‘ended up with’- what's with current magazines only having monochromatic or black and white fashion spreads? How terribly boring.).

Since I have to keep the colour ratio in my space the same as the image we're using which means most of the room will have to be navy blue, and in order to accomplish that I’ll have to present a room with navy walls. This worried me for a while – how to do a contemporary room with dark walls given that when I think of a contemporary space I usually think sleek, modern, open, and mostly white with pops of bright colour.

Yesterday morning when I woke up it hit me – lacquer. Lacquer has been popping up more and more frequently in the magazines and blogs that I read and I’ve always rather loved it as it adds a little something extra and unexpected to rooms.

The image above is of Todd Romano’s Manhattan apartment, and it has laid to rest some of my fears about an all blue room feeling very traditional instead of contemporary. What do you think? Do the lacquered walls add to the contemporary feel to the space? Or am I simply grasping at straws?

Monday Morning Love - Hotel Mansour

January 13, 2014

During my Design Theory class last semester the final project involved using images to demonstrate the theories we'd learned. Naturally I used Pinterest as my source for images. I came across one picture that I loved, but unfortunately it wasn't credited properly so I did a bit more digging and discovered where the image was taken.

This incredible space is part of the spa at the Royal Mansour in Marrakesh, Morocco. Can you believe how beautiful it is? I love the intricate lace details in the screens, and the lovely inlaid marble floor. I can totally see myself relaxing here before going back to my room and it's private courtyard. For almost as long as I can remember Morocco has been on my 'one day I must visit here' list. I'm not sure what it is about the country that appeals to me but I know one day I'll visit.

PS - in case anyone was interested I did a bit of digging, and a stay in the Hotel Mansour costs just $1400US a night for a one bedroom riad. Want to bring your family? A three bedroom riad costs just over $12,000US a night. I'll now add this to my 'places I'll visit when I win the lottery' list.

Monday Morning Love - Christina D'Ornato

December 09, 2013

It's late as I type this on Sunday night (which is technically Monday morning). I've spent all weekend working on my final project for class, and I'm still not done. I expect to see the early hours again tomorrow night.

Before I head off to bed for some much needed shut eye I thought I'd post this image, which by all accounts has flown around the internet many times, but somehow I only discovered it this past weekend.
The home of Christine D'Ornano
Isn't it stunning? It's from the London home of Christina D'Ornano, who, along with her family owns and runs the luxury cosmetics brand Sisley. I'm in love with the upholstered doors, the tile floor and the chandelier, but I think my favourite part is the painting of her mother over the mantel

Her home has been featured a number of times in print, including in Elle Decor and Elle Decor Espana, but I found this image on the website of photographer Joanna Henderson.  Had you seen Christine's home featured somewhere before? What do you think?

Monday Morning Love - David Collins Livingroom

October 21, 2013

Good Morning! Are any of you wondering where the weekend went - I know I am. I think it's because last weekend was a long one due to Thanksgiving, and I'm rather partial to long weekends so wish every weekend was at least three days long.

I came across this image a while back and I fell instantly in love. This was the living room of David Collins, who was an Irish Architect and Interior Designer based in London.
David-Collins-Livingroom
Living room by David Collins. Image from AD Spain, Dec. 2009 found here
I love how the room is comprised of mostly blue hues, but with a small pops of gold, and the stunning purple artwork. It's a very masculine space, and even though it was designed 4+ years ago I think it's timeless. I'm quite smitten with the royal blue sofa upholstered in velvet and want to curl up on it with a good book.

What do you think? Do you like this space as much as I do? If you could use one thing in this room in your home what would it be?

PS - I couldn't find the original image on the AD Spain website. It and more shots of David Collins' apartment can be found here.

Monday Morning Love - Wild for Etosha

October 14, 2013

Good morning everybody! I hope all my fellow Canadians are enjoying the Thanksgiving long weekend. Happy Turkey day!

Do you guys know Meredith Heron? She’s an amazing designer here in Toronto (she also recently spoke at BlogPodium) and she’s one designer whom I’d love to shadow for a few days – the pictures she posts on Instagram of the fabrics and finishes she’s mulling over? Amazing.

Anyways, about a month ago Meredith tweeted about a giveaway she was going to have later that week on her blog and naturally I responded:
Meredith-Heron-Twitter-Conversation-Sept-16
(BTW - this video explains things in case you're confused by the leopard bra and trapeze swinging reference)
It turns out the giveaway was for 2 double rolls of Thibaut’s Etosha wallpaper, and as amazing as that is, what’s crazier is I won!! Woot! The lovely people at Thibaut have sent me a sample of each of the five colours the paper is available in so now I need to pick one. I’ve decided that I’m going to use it in my bedroom, and I think I’m just going to do the one wall behind my bed, but that’s as far as I’ve gotten in the decision making process.

Etosha is quite a bold pattern which is a bit of a departure for me, but after poking around the internet and finding some lovely spaces in which the paper has been used I’m excited to see it in my place.

Here’s what I’m working with (apologies for the unmade bed - it was laundry day yesterday) :
The available colours are black, green, beige, grey and pearl. You can’t tell from the picture but the pearl has a bit of silver metallic shine to it. I don’t think the black or the green are a good fit, but I’m still undecided on which of the other three is my favourite. My eventual plan is to get a new headboard in a rich green, but for now the one I’ve got will stay. What do you think – which colour is your favourite? Which should I choose? Would you ever use the black one?

BlogPodium 2013 - A Long Delayed recap

October 03, 2013

On Saturday September 21st I had the amazing opportunity to attend BlogPodium for the 3rd time (you can read about the previous years here and here).  This time the conference was an expanded all-day affair with 250 marvelous bloggers from across Canada and even a few from the US.

It’s been a few weeks since I attended the conference, and even though there are quite a number of really good recaps already done by attendees (you can read them here) I still wanted to do a post to share some of what I learned for those of you who didn’t go, and so I always know where my notes are ;)

Monday Morning Love - I'm Jealous of Keri Russell

September 30, 2013

Good Morning Everyone! This is going to be a short post today, as I was up late last night working on some homework for my colour theory class, and it was one am before I realized I hadn't written a post yet for the morning (nor had I managed to write my BlogPodium recap, but that's another issue).

Fiddle Leaf tree's have been pretty popular in the last year or so, and when Lindsay over at Little House Blog posted in February that Ikea sold them for $15 I headed out and bought one. I was happy with it for about a week, and then I realized that I may have a bit of a black thumb when it comes to plants. It hasn't really died, but it's no longer pretty - the leaves that have toughed it out have gone brown around the edges, but most have fallen off so my cute little tree now looks rather sad. I can't get rid of it though 'cause it's not TRULY dead.

Anyways, I've had this image of Keri Russell's Brooklyn home pinned for a few months, and while I love her livingroom (the fireplace, the crown moulding!!!), I'm fairly certain what originally drew me to the photo was her lovely, healthy, THRIVING Fiddle Leaf tree by the window. Some people are jealous of Keri Russell because she's gorgeous, some because of her hair (tell me you remember her in Felicity), but not me - I'm jealous of her tree.

You can see more of Keri Russell's home in Elle Decor.

Monday Morning Love - Eames Dining Chairs and a Secret

September 16, 2013

If you've read my blog for a while you'll know of my deep and abiding love of the Eames dining chair with wooden legs, so I thought I'd share some lovely dining rooms all using the chair, but with hugely varying looks.

(yes, I know the last image hasn't got the exact same chair, but I'm including it because it's amazing, and I love the Eames rocker too)

Now I need to let you in on a little secret I've been keeping. Last summer I was walking by my local Kitchen Stuff Plus and I spotted a replica version of the chair. I was so excited I even blogged about it, and asked your opinion on what I should do - buy the replicas, or keep my black dining chairs. The opinions were evenly split, and then my mom (who is a great sounding board for all my schemes) came down on the side of keeping my black spindle chairs. So keep them I did - for a few more months anyways.

In early spring I opened my email to discover Kitchen Stuff Plus was having a 25% off all furniture sale. Excuse me? (insert image of me mentally calculating while doing a happy dance). A savings of 25% times four dining chairs is practically one free chair! Now the sale was limited to only one item per day per customer, and I still had my black dining chairs, but Kitchen Stuff Plus has a rather amazing 30 day return policy. I therefore did what any other self-respecting lover of Eames style chairs, who also loves a sale, would do - I bought one chair a day over four days and schlepped them home (it's a 1k walk). At the same time I listed my black chairs for sale on Craigslist and Kijiji with the promise to myself that if they didn't sell within the 30 days the much-loved Eames dining chairs would be returned.
Modern Eames-style dining chairs
Within a few days my black chairs were sold for $200, and that meant my dream chairs were finally mine. For those of you keeping track the chairs were normally $67.49 each. When you subtract the 25% they were $50.62 each or $202.48 for four. My four black dining chairs cost $71.28, which means when you subtract the $200 I got from their sale on I got four of my dream chairs for just $74.
Eames style dining chair
The moral of the story is eventually, if you're patient enough, and crafty enough you can get exactly what you want.

PS - Kitchen Stuff Plus has no idea that I'm writing this post - I got a good deal so I thought I'd share.
PPS - The KSP 25% off all furniture sale is on again though September 22nd.

Monday Morning Love - Black and White Checkerboard Floor

September 09, 2013

Morning everyone! I hope you had an excellent weekend. Saturday was my company golf tournament, and I woke up to a torrential rain storm which continued though the morning and into the early afternoon. Thankfully the rain slowed down just as we teed off, and by the time we finished the first hole it stopped. I hadn't played since the tournament last year, but after a few rough holes I got a bit of my swing back and had a good game - I even won ladies closest to the pin. Despite the soggy conditions it ended up being a really good day.

I saw this image floating around Pinterest last week and immediately loved it. The space is gorgeous - I'm loving the black and white checkerboard floors, and the detail on the ceiling is spectacular. What do you think?

Have you seen the new Guinness ad yet? I saw it for the first time last night and thought I'd share it with you - hope you like it as much as I do.

I've got a very busy week ahead with a heavy load at work, a condo board meeting and the first class of my new course - wish me luck in surviving it all with a tiny bit of my sanity intact.

Monday Morning Love - Light-Filled Work Spaces

September 02, 2013

I can't believe it's already September. Seriously - where did summer go? I hope you're all enjoying your long weekend. I've been trying to work on some painting projects, but some unfortunate hiccups has made finishing everything on my to-do list this weekend rather impossible. If you follow me on Instagram you've seen some of my setbacks. If I'm lucky I'll hopefully get a bit more accomplished today.

September, like most people I expect, always me think of back to school. It's been a rather depressing number of years since I've experienced the nervousness and excitement of the first day back at school after summer vacation, but I will be continuing with my Interior decorating courses this fall, so I suppose that means I'm heading back to school too.

When I return to class I'll be doing my homework on my dining room table, but I really wish I had a big house so I could have a designated office/work area.

I'm rather in love with this work space. The desk isn't large, but I love how there is loads of storage all around for books and hiding away all those 'important papers' which pile up at an alarming rate. The space is part of a whole home renovation done by Jessica Helgerson Interior Design. You can see more of the home here.

This bright and airy space is lovely. Can you imagine doing homework or working on your latest project while surrounded by all those windows? This room was part of the House of Windsor - a home designed by Windsor Smith and decorated by several designers for Veranda magazine in 2011. You can see more of the home here.

Do you have a home office/work space or do you use another area of your home for homework, working on projects and paying bills like I do? If you don't have a work specific space do you wish you did?

Monday Morning Love - A Colourful Bathroom, and Some Great News

August 26, 2013

Morning everyone! I hope you had an excellent weekend. Is anyone else having a hard time believing that it's the last week of August already? Where has this summer gone? It seems like just last week I still putting a hat on when I left the house and already there's fall clothing in stores, and today I saw Halloween decorations for sale in Home Sense.

Anyways, I saw this image of this bathroom by Natalie Clayman a few weeks ago and I loved it so I thought I'd share. I adore all of it - the red vanity, the marble sink, the wall mounted faucet, the scones, the rug, the black bamboo mirror, but I think the best part is the whimsical Paradiso Wallpaper by Nina Campbell. Love it.

You may recall that this summer I was taking an Intro to Drafting course (this might be part of the reason I feel summer has flown by). Anyways, the final grades were released yesterday, and I'm a little pleased with myself.

Monday Morning Love - Jackie Astier Dining Room

August 19, 2013

My Mom came to town on Friday to see me and to give me a bit of a hand with trying to fix my dining room (also to see my brother who's in town from the UK - it's a bit of a family reunion this week). You may remember that I recently shared my big shame - my dining room, complete with globs of wallpaper paste and cracked plaster walls. I've gotten a few quotes from professionals to get the walls and ceiling skim coated, but when those quotes were from anywhere from one to two thousand dollars I've decided that I'm suddenly much more inclined to try the DIY route. So far we've sanded every surface trying to remove as much wallpaper glue as possible, and primed using a plaster friendly primer. Next up - adventures in skim coating. Wish us luck.

Anyways, in keeping with this weekends activities I thought I'd share this dining room that was featured in Elle Decor.

It's it gorgeous? It's the dining room of Jackie Astier, and I can't decide what I like the most - the lacquered walls, the amazing dining table, or the chairs upholstered in teal. What do you think? Would you ever be tempted to lacquer your walls? Or use teal and gold?

Monday Morning Love - Castel-Meur

August 12, 2013

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend. I didn't. I spent it working on my final project for my drafting class. I think I may have a permanent crick in my neck from hunching over my drafting board. My project is due on Tuesday and then I'll be done the course. Hallelujah! In all honestly so far I'm pretty happy with the way the project is turning out. If that's still the case once I'm done I might share it here - but we'll have to see how the colouring portion goes since it's been quite a white since I've coloured anything and I'm out of practice :)

Anyways, I saw this image on Friday evening when I should have been working on my project and I fell in love - isn't it the neatest looking house you've ever seen?

The house is in Plougrescant in north-western France. Built in 1861, it was situated between the giant boulders to protect it from high winds and storms. It's still owned by the same family who now use it as a vacation home.

What do you think? I've always been a bit partial to stone houses, and this one is no exception.

Monday Morning Love - Pink and Gold Living Room

August 04, 2013

I think I've mentioned that I'm taking an Intro. to Drafting course, and it wraps up in just over a week. For the final project we have to draft a floor plan for a condo which mean I've been trolling Pinterest and the internet at large for inspiration on furniture ideas.
Caitlin Wilson Rittenhouse square Penthouse Livingroom

I found this image of a living room designed by Caitlin Wilson and I fell in love. While this shade of pink is a very bold and striking colour, decorating the rest of the room in mostly whites and creams means the couch, while undeniably the center of attention in the room, isn't competing visually against anything else. It's without a doubt a feminine space, but it's also a relaxed and happy one.

What do you think? Could you live with a pink couch?

Monday Morning Love - Green with Black Polkadots

July 29, 2013

I'm going to try something new. On Monday mornings I thought I'd post something pretty I've found while exploring the internet. Most of what I'll post is stuff I've pinned - I'm rather hoping this will encourage me to go back and explore what I've pinned and see if the same images still resonate with me weeks or even months later.

For whatever reason I love this entry and stairs. I'm not sure if it's the green runner, or the black polka dots on the walls but it makes me happy. If I were to change anything I'd use only one pattern for the floor rugs - either the zebra or the x's - I find the two just a bit much. What do you think? Do you like the space? Would you do this in your home?

Something Different

February 20, 2013

I haven't posted anything here in a while – my apologies for that. If you recall I’m on the Board of Directors for my building, and we’re proposing replacing all the windows (all 112 of them). The ‘Big’ meeting is tomorrow and the owners will vote on our proposal so we’ve been busy getting everything organised. As I write this there is about 21 hrs to go before the meeting and I have no idea if all the work that went into this proposal will be enough to get it passed. Keep your fingers crossed.

I’m going to stray away quite a bit from what I normally write about here and share with you something that a couple of friends posted on Facebook that I thought was moving and quite powerful. I hope you take a few minutes to watch it.
This spoken work poem was done by Shane Koyczan, and if his voice and style seem familiar it's for good reason – he’s the amazing poet who performed his poem ‘We Are More’ at the opening ceremonies of the Vancouver Olympic games.
PS - I know the video is a little ‘heavy’, so if you want to see something that will make you say ‘aww’ I highly recommend this one.

The Interior Design Show - 2013

January 29, 2013

The Interior Design show ran this past weekend, and I was lucky enough to attend again. This year I was exceptionally lucky to be invited by Masco and Beige Is Dead to participate in their #instawalk with a bunch of very talented design bloggers (seriously - Meredith Heron, and Jonathan Legate were in the group, and it was led by Margot Austin - I have no illusions that my blog is on par with their work, but I was honoured to be asked).

We spent the morning in Friday wandering the floor at the Interior Design show Instagraming all the great things that caught our eyes, and I thought I'd share some of my shots below (If you want to see more search for #ids13walk in Instagram)

clocks made out of felt
These clocks at the Felt Store booth were neat
Copper bathtub in Ikea booth at IDS13
This antique copper bathtub In the Ikea Canada had to be one of the most photographed things at the show - with good reason - it's was stunning in person.

Ikea Canada impressed again with this display of grouped Hektar Pendants
Farrow and ball paint colours
This display of their paint colours by Farrow & Ball was really pretty
wall mounted light fixture from living lighting on King
I really wanted to take this lovely gold flush mount light from Living Lighting on King home with me - I think it would look pretty in my foyer
There were some many wonderful things to look at, that it was hard to take it all in. Looking at the hashtag on Instagram later I saw lots of things I had somehow missed.

Did you guys go to the show this year? Did you go gaga for the copper tub like I did? What was your favourite booth?

That time I met Sherry and John

November 13, 2012

If you’re a blogger, or read shelter blogs with any sort of regularity I’m sure you’ve heard John and Sherry Petersik (I admit it – I had to check how their last name was spelled – Doh!) of Young House Love, and I’m sure you’ve heard that they’ve written a wee little book that was recently released. As tends to happen when one releases a book they’ve embarked on a rather exhausting book tour of 21+ cities, and Toronto just happened to be one of them, and the only Canadian stop of their whirlwind tour.

Last evening on a dark and rainy night I made my way across town to the West Elm store for the signing and arrived to find quite a line winding it way around the store, and while it took about 2 hours for me to get to the front of the line it was time well spent as I got to ogle West Elm’s lovely wares. Below are some pictures of the event – they were all taken with my phone so I apologise in advance for some of the blurry shots.

Sigh - the record of my brush with blogging superstars, and it's blurry :(
Book signed by sherry and John Petersik
So far I've only managed to quickly flip through the book, but already I'm plotting projects #2, 12, 24 and #36. I'm sure there will be more that I'm inspired to try, and maybe I'll even complete some of them!

What a week!

October 19, 2012

If you follow me on Intagram you know that last week I was in Ireland - I had planned to share with you some of my pictures, but it’s now Friday and I haven’t even had a chance to look at them myself as it seems like I barely stopped moving all week. Maybe I’ll manage to edit some to share next week.

While this week was busy there were a couple of great things that happened. On Monday I found out that I won the ‘Paint it like new’ giveaway from Vanessa at Decor Happy. I can’t tell you how very excited I am about this. Remember the Kijiji chairs I got early last year? Well, as soon as I decide on some pretty fabric they’re going to get a nice colourful makeover. I think it’s about time I got a move-on with this project given I’ve owned the chairs for almost 2 year.

On Wednesday I went to see ‘Argo’ with D, and I quite enjoyed it. I’m too young to remember the Iranian hostage crisis, but even I know the story was largely fictionalized for an American audience. I found the Wikipedia article 'Canadian Caper', this one by Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada and this one on 'The Slate' helpful in clearing up a few things.

On Thursday evening a friend and I had the opportunity to head down to Liberty Village to attend the IYellow Wine Club Design Series event being held at the new EQ3 store. It was a fun evening – what’s not to like about checking out some wonderful furniture while sampling some tasty wine and appetizers? Crush VQA was sampling 4 wines and I have to say I rather liked their Riesling-Gewurztraminer – it would go nicely with relaxing on a summer patio, so it’s too bad we’re heading rapidly into fall - drat.

Anyways, here are some of the drool worthy things I spotted last evening (sorry – they were taken with my phone)
EQ3 Reverie two piece sectional in grey
If I didn't already have a sofa I'd be tempted by this one - the Reverie 2 piece sectional
EQ3 Marimekko fabric
I love the bright and colourful Marimekko fabric, and the creative way they used it as wall art
iYellow design series - Crush Riesling with a slider
The second of the two Crush wines I tried (the Riesling) and a tasty slider - one of the yummy appetizers (I'm a bad blogger and forgot the name of the restaurant that provided the food)
EQ3 Tahsis light fixture
Love the EQ3 Tahsis light. I have a very similar one in storage - I should really get around to hanging it in my dining room.
Eames Lounge chair in white leather
The Eames Lounge chair in lovely white leather. In a future home I will have one of these
I think I might have to go back for some of the fabric, and if I'm lucky enough to win the lottery the Eames Lounge chair will be coming home with me too!
*Disclosure - I was given tickets to the IYellow Design Series event at EQ3, however all opinions expressed are solely my own.
