One Room Challenge | Bedroom – Week One

If you’ve read this blog for a while you may have noticed I have a bit of project ADD. I have piles of great (in my opinion) ideas on how to decorate my space, but I rarely follow through on them, or worse, I get started and then never finish. This isn’t really a good thing since I don’t have a single space in my home I’m really happy with, and well, I write this blog which is supposed to be all about my attempts at decorating – it’s a little silly that I haven’t really decorated anything isn’t it?
For the past few years I’ve followed the One Room challenge that was started by Linda at Calling it Home – twice a year a group of pretty amazing design bloggers completely redo a room in 6 weeks. It’s that time of year again and this time I’ve decided I’m going to participate in the link-up challenge in an effort to get a room done. I’m rather hoping a 6 week deadline will kick me in the butt and help me get ONE ROOM finished (or close to it).
I’ll be trying to finish my bedroom, which in all honesty is probably the room that I’ve completed the most projects for – my dresser, my headboard and the pinch-pleated drapes. They’ll all be staying, but may be modified a bit.
Here’s pretty much what I’m starting with:

The rest of the room will be inspired by the Neo Toile fabric from Tonic Living. If I get my act together I’m hoping I can sew some cushions for the bed (note to self: find some good tutorials). I also need some bedside tables, because the mismatched ones are an eye-sore, and some new bedside lamps since my current white and green ones won’t go with my new colour scheme. Unfortunately I won't be getting the 1st Dibs tables pictured above since they cost many mortgage payments.
I also want to add some personality to the room with some art. I’ll be using the Zoe Pawlak art I won from Christine Dovey, but I’ll need some other pieces. I might order something from some of the art I love on Etsy, but I’m not yet sure what I want. The room also needs a rug, but given my budget (miniscule) that likely won’t happen. We’ll see - maybe I’ll find the deal of the century.
In the interest of full disclosure I should tell you I’ve already started this project, and I’ve already run into a huge problem. I noticed a small crack on the wall behind my dresser and when I moved it to do a quick patch I discovered the plaster had pulled away from the lath and was bulging and moving rather alarmingly. It’s never a good thing when your wall moves. I’ve started the repair which I’m crossing my fingers will work and won’t look too nasty once I’m done. At the moment it looks like this which I’m very much hoping is a case of ‘it has to get worse before it gets better’.
What do you think? Can I get the room done in 6 weeks? Does anyone in Toronto have the name of a great wallpaperer? Any great artists or art sources to share? Let me know!

I like your vision so far and your room seems like a great blank canvas. are you just going to recover the headboard?
ReplyDeleteAh hooray!!!! Your ZP will look amazing in there- her art always bring a space to life and I ADORE the wallpaper...adore, adore. Your colour scheme is so luxe...love the royal blue and wood together. As for a wallpaper installer, it's sadly the only resource person I don't have on 'the team'- having said that, I might be able to find someone through my Super Allen- And if you'd like some art resources, let me know...happy to share!
ReplyDeleteThere are a few of us local bloggers doing this so we will have to spur each other on. I love your inspiration board - the wallpaper, the Neo Toile, the navy headboard. You can totally just paper the headboard wall. Sometimes doing an entire room in paper is a bit too much. I did it in my bathroom and I regret it actually - love the paper but not on all walls. It's a bit busy unlike this one which would look good on all walls. You got this Michelle! PS I have a wallpaper hanger so email me if you still need someone.

ReplyDeleteGreat inspiration board. That paper! If it is any consolation, every single project we have embarked upon in our money pit has resulted in some sort of disaster hidden underneath. Part of the territory - but I am sure you will pull through. Nothing like a deadline to keep ya on track! Best of luck.

ReplyDeleteI'm so happy I've finally figured out where I'm going to hang it - it's a gorgeous piece. I'd love some sources for art - sadly my budget is very tiny. That said, perhaps I could ask Santa for something ;)

My son is Eamon (we almost used the 2nd n in his spelling) and it struck me since in these parts it's not a name you hear every day. I read your bio and we seem to have a lot in common. I too, have design ADD. I think it may be the nature of the beast!

I'm in the middle of working on my living room & entry way, but before I knew it had a grand plan going to do my pantry for the ORC. I love your idea of doing one wallpapered wall - can't wait to see the finished product!

ReplyDeleteI too am participating in the One Room Challenge. My challenges? I just moved to a completely new state (Texas) last week and therefore have no idea where to source things other than Wal Mart and Home Depot. :) I'll be transforming a 30 year old polyurethaned oak coffered ceiling that has never before seen paint. The accompanying powder room rivals the worst gas station stall ever. But a bonus is that the previous owners installed a wine glass and bottle holder on the ceiling of the bathroom. I kid you not. Come take a peek.
I love this idea. I'm glad I'm not the only person who has a million ideas and no room that's really complete. What a relief! Can't wait to see what you do!
ReplyDeleteThis is great. I love this idea of one room at a time. I may have to do the same thing, although most of my list will be things like "put battery in clock" "change lightbulb" Nothing as exciting as your mood board.

ReplyDeleteI love the one-room challenge and have followed along over the last few years. I find it inspires me to roll up my sleeves and just get going. I like where you're going with your vision, and you have such a great start on it with the DIYs you've already tackled - and WOW, what great wallpaper! I think you can do it in the six weeks and I'll be cheering you on from this side of the screen! ;-)
