I'm a Glutton for Punishment
May 16, 2012
My television is currently sitting on an Ikea cabinet that I inherited when I purchased my condo. I firmly believe that the previous owner left it because it's quite long and therefore difficult to move without dismantling it. While it serves its purpose, it's a little too modern for my taste, and I've been sort-of keeping half an eye out for something to replace it for almost as long as I've lived here.

Early last week I was browsing Craigslist as I do from time to time, and I spotted something that intrigued me enough to go across town after 10 pm to see it.

The seller's Craigslist picture |
That night I had nightmares about going to pick up the piece. The seller lived on the upper floor of a converted house with a long narrow stairway and I honestly had no idea how my mom and I were going to carry the console down. Happily the seller was having movers over the next morning, and she very kindly asked them to haul the console downstairs to the front porch where my mom and I only had to get it into the back of the CR-V I rented for the occasion.
After a bit of huffing and puffing on both ends of the journey, the console finally made it to my place, and is currently sitting in my dining room waiting for me to get started on its transformation.

So, what do you think? Have I gone completely nuts?

I owned that same IKEA sideboard about 3 years back. I used mine for my dining area & it worked well during the time I owned it, though I was glad to see it go when I moved.
ReplyDeleteThe sellers photo isn't one that would have caught my eye, but your photo really allows it to shine. It definitly has a lot of potential & I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with it.
Michelle, that is an awesomely cool CL find! I can't wait to see what you do with it! It looks like Deco to me as well... and the hardware? :-D Great find!
ReplyDeleteHi Jessa,
ReplyDeleteThe Ikea sideboard is great - it's just too bid for my place. Once I finish my new console I'm going find it a nice new home with someone who will appreciate it more than I do.
I'm hoping this project goes a lot more quickly than my dresser - it should given I've refinished something before so will be a lot less fearful of actually using the stripper and stain
Michelle
Thanks :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a great piece, and great potential. I look forward to seeing your progress!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to see what you come up with. It's such a fantastic and original looking piece.
ReplyDeleteI'm wondering if removing all of the front, damaged piece would make it easier? Maybe replace it with some rope type of trim, or just a narrow piece of wood that fits?
good for you for seeing it's potential.
Hi Mel,
ReplyDeleteI've got an idea about the missing piece on the front - but I'll have to see if I can make it work - fingers crossed!

Hi Sharon,
ReplyDeleteI hope that I'll be able to report that I've made some progress soon :)
